Trying to setup a little server for myself and my family for music and movies. I had an old ASRock board that I used in an earlier build, so I took it out of the old box it was in and laid it on a non-conductive surface for testing with an E4500.

With nothing but 20-pin, 4-pin, cpu fan, 1GB DDR400, vga, and usb keyboard installed I tried starting the thing up.

First couple tries - nothing. I tried reseating the HSF and replacing the CMOS battery with no avail. I then placed the board into a case, screwed it into place - still nothing.

Finally I took the board out and tried it one more time, and pop goes something at the corner of the board, which looks to me to be either a misc. IC chip or an SCR or something.

Anyhow, here's a picture of the burnt item. Is the board salvageable?

Here's a better look at the item on the board.

assrock was junk quality back then. (i've heard they've improved of late... but I still don't trust assrock, the retarded little brother of asus)

I'm not sure it's worth trying to fix.

Googled it. It's a MOSFET. Looking around, random new MOSFETs seem to cost about 2.50 to a max of maybe five bucks if you're unlucky. This seems to be a bulk part, but Ebay has a couple of them listed for 2 pounds.

Never thought of Googling the numbers, thanks. I'll check with my electronics instructor tomorrow, maybe he has a couple of these kicking around. I'll just have to be sure to solder it right.
