I bought two of these drives in August, one (drive #1) failed immediately and the other (drive #2) lasted until the beginning of September. The first I RMA'd through Seagate and it's replacement (drive #3) failed a few days after the second drive failed. I RMA'd the drives again and of the two replacment drives one failed within 12 hours of arriving (drive #4). At this point I don't trust drive #5 enough to use it as more then a parity drive in a RAID6.

At the same time three Western Digital drives (one green, two caviar black drives) haven't had any issues at all - despite the load put on them rebuilding a RAID6 4 times in short order...

Avoid these drives if you value your data - and don't want to spend the cost again on RMA shipping.

small sample size is... small sample size.

Sounds like you just got unlucky.

You are running 3 different models of drives with varying spindle speeds in a single RAID array? If so, that's a recipe for constant problems and bad performance even if it does actually work reliably. If you're RMA'ing these drives based on the RAID going out of sync and not SMART diagnostic conditions, you're RMA'ing drives for the wrong reasons. Regardless, if you're attempting to use these drives in RAID you most certainly should be updating their firmware to the latest CC49 from Seagate's website. If their firmware isn't CCxx, you posted this under the wrong product I regularly use the 7200.12 drives on standlone systems and in RAID-1's with no abnormal reliability problems.

The 7200.11's on the other hand, were a joke and sucked even with their updated firmwares--they had both physical failure and buggy firmware problems. In RAID-1's, I usually ran them with NCQ disabled (as they never really fixed their NCQ firmware bugs) until one turfed and then got rid of them. I ran into AHCI / NCQ problems with them in RAID-1 long before their firmware issues ever became the publicity fiasco it was.

Got one of these in my system as a "storage" drive for everything I download, so far it it has powered on 607 times and has 4712 hours in operation, no failure here. (According to CrystalDiskInfo)
You're either doing something your shouldn't (like putting different drives in raid) or just unlucky.

Bad luck for you but that means nothing. I've had a bunch of WD drives fail on me but that also means nothing.
I have used a few hundred of this model number with only 1 failure. This also means nothing. As a previous poster pointed out, small sample size. This sort of thing can only be determined in the thousands, tens of thousands, etc...in terms of statistical significance.

And sometimes they can even raise threads from the dead.

True story.
