I picked up one of these hard drives a while ago and it worked well at first, then it got slower and slower, and eventually I noticed SMART was reporting a reallocated sector count way above normal. (Unfortunately, the first time I didn't notice this until the situation got so bad no OS wanted to boot from the thing). Got a replacement through Seagate.

It's a month or so later and my replacement is doing the same kind of thing. SMART is reporting a horrific, gigantic read error rate (158587999 and counting, though I understand this value is a little wonky with Seagate drives) and a steadily growing reallocated sector count (91, was 1 shortly after I got the drive), and in practice things are definitely feeling unhappy at this point.

Has anyone here had a similar experience with these drives? I'm trying to decide if I should call it quits and get a different hard drive for my primary, or deal with yet another advance replacement through Seagate.

Personally I'd grab a WD Black 1TB, they have been absolutely rock solid for me.

Maybe change your SATA port and cable just to help rule them out.

I haven't had the same experience, though I do have about 5 of these drives. *knock on wood* None has failed yet, especially considering they're in my file server.

I'd say you're just a bit unlucky.

Haven'T had any issue with mine, it's faster than my wd640gb blacks and it's also wayyyy quieter than the blacks.

No issues here, used a pair of these SATA3 versions in RAID mirror that runs 24-7 recently. I've had to RMA one 7200.12 drive thus far (1TB, SATA2 version) over the ~2 years or so these have been out, and possibly another on the horizon but I'll be dealing with that this week.
