Random lag since installing new hard drives

Hi!
I hope someone can help me. I bought two of these recently:

Western Digital WD20EARS Caviar Green 2TB SATA2 3Gbps 64MB Cache 3.5IN Hard Drive OEM

And since I installed them I get random lag. About two times a day the computer will freeze for about 3-4 seconds. If I'm listening to music, the music stops completely, if I'm playing a game, same thing, game freezes completely for a few seconds.

Never had this happened before. I tried defragmenting all the hard drives to no avail.

What could be the problem?

I'm running Vista 64bit
4 gig ram
My motherboard: Gigabyte MA790XT-UD4P AMD790X ATX AM3 DDR3 2PCI-E SATA2

thank you

Are you using these for your OS? A "Green" drive should not be used for OS.

Sounds like the head is parking and having to wake up.

You dont use these drives for any install or OS. You need a WD Black or WD Blue for OS, game installs.

The WD Green is only for storage/back-up only. Nothing else. You never install anything on these drives.

You need to turn off in windows power options settings, and set turn off HDD to never.

I'm not using them for my OS, I'm using them for storage.

I'll try to set turn off HDD to never, but when i get the lag, I'm not even using 'em, so I don't know why they would be powering up at those odd moments.

I guess I'll try that thing in your link too Saberon, but it's been a long while since DOS and my brother's 486!

Thanks.

Try unplugging them to see if the lag goes away.

No worries.

Just follow the instructions step by step. It's super easy, nothing complicated.

Could be the temp / pagefile stored on that drive too.

Most likely head parking, it's why these drives pretty much suck. Even as media storage, they'll have that spin up lag of like 4-5 seconds in explorer, applications trying to access files, etc if they haven't been in use for a few minutes.

Are your games installed on those drives or are they in your main SSD (I assumed you have one since you mentionned those were for storage purposes only) ?

You were not really specific describing your problem but are your games installed on those drives or are they on your main OS drive ? If they're located on that hard drive then the HDD's head parking would be a plosible option.

On the other hand, if you don't access those disks when listening to music, playing games then it's a little akweird.

Like some other dude said, try unplugging them and see if that fixes the problem. If it does, try to reformat them and don't install any programs on those green drives. Buy some WD Caviar Black 1tb instead. They're A LOT faster.

No the games are not installed on those drives. They're on the main OS drive. The music too. And I'm not accessing the green drives when the lag occurs.

I unplugged them yesterday and so far so good.

I had this problem too and it was because the drives would resume from sleep mode for some reason, even if I didn't use them. This would cause games like bc2 to freeze for like 3-4 seconds before I hear the HD's starting to spin. I put the setting 'never' as shown above and it solved the problem.

The problem is when you put these drives to sleep and some stupid program decides to poll your hard drive. WMP for example is notorious for it. Load it up and all of your sleeping hard drives will wake up.

Unparking a head takes less than a second.

Because you are not using them, but your software is.

Again, it's because background software is accessing them.

Just turn off HDD spindown and the problems go away.

No lag since I unplugged them.

So I'll just set the drives to never spin down and hopefully live happily ever after.

Thanks for the help.

I had a friend who was experiencing weird lag issues, and it turned out his sata cable had come a little loose. It still worked, but as soon as he reconnected it properly the lag went away. So maybe the connecter just wasn't on right the first time.
