I bought this drive on boxing day last year.

Programs like eMule and BitTorrent seems to run extremely slow on this drive, and often cause system idle due to the drive making very noticable sound of rapid I/O: nothing could be done while its doing that! It lasts from 30 sec to roughly 1 min.

Now the problem seem to become more serious, the case happened few times even when I'm not running eMule/BT. (actually I removed them since they could not function correctly on this drive)

I'm not sure if it's problem of this drive or something to do with poor handle of shipping from your warehouse.

Try updating your firmware, a drive you bought that long ago would be using the CCxx firmware which is currently at CC49. You're safest updating in SATA mode vs AHCI.

The drive is dying. Download SeaTools and run the extended SMART tests. It will fail. Time to RMA it.

I've coined the term "I/O flatline" for what you're describing. Basically, the drive encounters an error, and tries to recover (read) the data for about 30 seconds. During that time it's unresponsive and ignores your OS's other requests.

Lots of drives die shortly after starting this behaviour, so you should backup anything important on the drive and get ready to send it in.

+1 Kramy.

I had a DOA hard drive that would do the flatline as you call it. It would work fine for a minute and then go "dun dun dun dun dun dun (x5)" and then disappear from Windows. A reboot would fix it but it would do the same thing within minutes again.

Thanks for the replies.

Never done a RMA before, could someone help me out?

I still got the reciept, is that all I need to do RMA?

For anyone interested in the difference between consumer and enterprise RAID certified drives in terms of their firmware design, this type of activity when failing is what's basically very restricted on RAID certified drives (by which they usually mean RAID more advanced than 0/1, as Seagate certifies these 7200.12's for RAID, but 0/1 forms only).

RAID-optimized drives (such as the Constellation product lines, WD RE4 etc) ship with TLER (Time Limited Error Recovery) vs this type of extended error recovery retries which would cause a RAID to go out of sync. In a RAID, the controller handles the defects and maintains it's own bad sector or grown defects list. A drive like this will often read the data back (albeit slowly) in this condition before things start going really sideways. Definitely get your data off it...
