The WD Green 3TB Vs. Hitachi Deskstar 5K3000

I'm about to grab a 3TB HDD. Two options look decent: This WD 3TB Green Power Drive (WD30EZRX)
...and the Hitachi Deskstar 5K3000 0S03230.

Does anyone have insight into which is faster or otherwise a better choice?

One characteristic that is important to me is acoustics. I'd prefer the quieter of the two if the performance isn't drastically different...

The Green drives are *supposed* to be the quietest drives available, but the ones I have now (1.5TB) make an annoying rattling seek noise when they "idled" even when the SATA cable was unplugged. I *do NOT want* more of that crap...

Sounds like you have a case vibration problem, make sure all the screws are tight for the drives (not overtightened, just ensure they are not loose). See if anything near the drive cage is loose as well; wires, screws, etc...

I'd rather have the Hitachi if I was putting one in my machine. Having to wdiddle greens to make them behave is a nuisance when alternatives are out there.. well that and I hate the triangle PCB they're using with the flaky diodes.

No, this is most definitely not a "case vibration" issue. It does some kind of seek in the background after it has idled for exactly 15 seconds.

The way I've worked around it is by creating a batch file that writes a byte to the disk every 15 seconds. That is a pretty terrible thing to have ti do to work around what must be a dodgy firmware implementation.

It has happened with three different units of the series as well. It is totally disgusting.

I am just hoping that newer drives from WD don't do this.... Has anyone else noticed this issue? There are a few threads on WD forums about this problem, but WD essentially denies the problem exists whenever confronted about it.

Just to follow up, I did end up buying the Hitachi 5K3000.

I haven't really tested yet, but I'm quite satisfied with its performance. As for the acoustics, I've found that the spindle noise is definitely a little louder than the Green Powers I've had before, but the thing that I just LOVE is that the seek noise is damned near silent.

I just can't hear the drive seek at all... the irony is that with the green power, ALL I ever heard was seek noise.

So I think that it's a fair trade off, since seek noise is far more irritating than spindle noise - at least in this case. It's still not loud enough to bother me... it doesn't stand out that much over my undervolted 120mm fans.

Oh, I was going to add that the Hitachi definitely has some vibration going on, so if you can dampen that, it makes the drive quite a bit more quiet.

This is the well known WD head park issue. Do a search with that name for further info. I'd suggest the SPCR forums.

No, this is definitely a different issue. The head park thing causes a clunk after a predetermined interval, and that can be shut off with the relevant software. This is a wholly different thing, and in my mind, much worse.
