A few weeks ago, I signed up for the HP Cloud Services private Beta. Space was limited, and it was sure to be a fairly popular attraction, so I did not hold my hopes high. Today, I got my invitation to join, so I just activated my account.

As I indicated to HPCS upon signing up, I will be using it for folding. There are limits in terms of how many resources you can consume as a Beta tester. Of key relevance to folding, we are limited to 20 cores.

So, in order to max out the space available to me, I set up the following cloud servers:

2 x standard.2xlarge (8 vCPU / 32GB RAM / 960GB HDD)
1 x standard.xlarge (4 vCPU / 16GB RAM / 480GB HDD)

I just did this a few minutes ago, so haven't had a chance to login yet and set the cloud servers up - but a pair of 8-core servers plus a 4-core server might net somewhere around 40k to 50k PPD I'm guessing. If anybody wants a free (albeit time-limited) 50k PPD, I suggest signing up sooner rather than later. Over the past couple of days, many people who signed up under the auspices of folding have been getting approved, so the cat's out of the bag and space is, as I mentioned earlier, limited. So get it while the getting's good!

I actually set this up last week. The boxes net around 50-60k PPD. For 2x8 core and a quad core.

LMAO, I did the same thing! I got approved on the weekend but haven't had a chance to set it up yet... hopefully tonight!!!

EDIT: FYI, I see that HPCS is not folding again as of noon today.

They haven't given us a timeframe but if it is like other HP beta's I've been involved with, I would say a few months.

When you guys sign up, try typing (^2)hpcloud in the Twitter field, where (^2) refers to an 'at' symbol (which is filtered on this forum). You might just find that your application is pre-qualified for immediate access.   

Don't expect the immediate access to be available for long, though...

Odd, mine didn't. I also never got any mention of 20 CPUs. Mine said:


1. We request you limit your HP Cloud Compute usage to 5 instances.
2. Limit HP Cloud Object Storage usage to 2TB of total data across the account.
3. Only use this beta for testing purposes. No production workloads should be hosted on the system at this time.

Private Beta Customers:

Customers currently in the Private Beta can now use BOTH US West 2 - AZ1 & AZ2 for all Compute Instance builds.

We are requesting that Private Beta customers limit their instance creation to 5 instances.

Overall account limits are any combination of 20 instances, 20 floating IPs, 20 VCPUs, 200 GB Ram, or 1000 GB HardDrive.

that's what it looks like to me. The guy I spoke to at HP was pretty adamant about only using 20 cores.

You are reading it correctly however the limits do not seem to be correct. For example it says a max of 1TB yet "standard.2xlarge" are 960GB each. It says 20 VCPU's , yet I have 36.

Perhaps its means per "compute server", not sure   :unsure:

Something isn't right, might have to contact HP.

Ummm, these are just requests not limits. However, the guy at HP told that if they find people abusing these "requests", they might just shut them down, so caveat emptor

Well I will post the question to them either way as I did some testing and the CPU "limit" seems to be per compute cluster/server (allocated space is ignored).

Confirmation is always a good thing. 2x 8 vCPU and 4x 8 vCPU makes a big difference in PPD   B)

I was going to be good, then i wasn't. I'm going to once the current wu on the overage client. that'll be done soon I hope. I actually kinda forgot about it as the confirmation email didn't mention it, just the 2TB space limit and 5 instances
