CHIMP CHALLENGE for Canada

Hey all you motherfolders

This year our buddies over at HardWare Canucks (HWC) are participating in Chimp Challenge 2K10.

This is basically a fun team-based challenge between different teams like MaximumPC, EVGA, Overclock.net to see which team can get a specifically named user to 20 million points the fastest.

Right now they are proposing the user name as Beavers_Gone_Bananas which is just SO CUTE
So to participate you change however many clients you wish to a username of Beavers_Gone_Bananas and team 54196 and continue to fold away.

It WILL take away from some of your folding for NCIX (obviously), but it's for fun and the chance to display the hallowed JADED MONKEY on the winner's web site.

For those who think it's a lock for EVGA, last year Overclock.net won it, so it's never a foregone conclusion.
The following thread sheds some light:

http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/hardwarecanucks-f-h-team/30942-hwc-chimp-challenge-2010-thread-go-bananas.html

I will be participating in this as a tribute to THE Great White North that I love. I believe this will be the only Canadian team to participate so I'm spamming you all to help the cause.

The "event" starts at 12pm Pacific Time on May 5th, 2010. I encourage anyone here that's interested to visit the thread and throw in some clients to help our Canadian friends over at HWC.

Please feedback here or over on HWC's forum to see what it's all about.

Once she's all said and done, FOLD AS YOU WERE :D

Let's show the other teams that a small bunch of flannel wearing Canucks can give'r and give'r hard!

NCIX is looking to support the run as well. More details to come.

Looking forward to the details. It definitely should be combined effort with HWC, though, if we wish to make a dent in the proceedings, I would think.

Yeah, Canadian effort united is a better shot than the two rival teams.

I wonder if we could even recruit Hyperlight to join in on this one. Would be nice to fold alongside him for once.

Agreed. Considering he's amassed 46 million points he definitely has some folding muscle.

I'll be providing as much as I can during that time. Already mobilizing.

I'll contribute what I can to this challenge as well. It would be great to get everyone involved folding under the one name and banner to show how strong the Canadian Folders are! Hopefully Hyperlight will be willing to join in as well.

I really should centralize my folding directories.
It'd make stuff like this easy to implement.

Hmm. I think I smell another unionfs-fuse project coming...

Count me in. Will switch all my folding power to the cause.
I'll wait until a few days before the starting date and time: May 5th at noon PST.

I hope to have the rest of the parts by than to complete my current build which is on hold waiting for a certain AMD CPU Asus MB & GPU to be released and I will start folding full force. To help show the competition how we do things In Canada.
Cheers

The Chimp Challenge is a competition between several of the top Folding at Home teams in the world. Each team folds under the same username and races to a set number of points. The Challenge encourages greater awareness and participation in Stanford's Folding at Home distributed computing project while encouraging friendly competition between the top teams.

NCIX has never participated in the Chimp Challenge before (frankly, we would have been blown out of the water). But with the impressive growth of our team over the past six months, coupled with the impressive emergence of the Hardware Canucks folding team, we feel that our combined resources can mount a competitive charge in this year's competition.

Sorry all,

I got the username wrong in my original post. I have updated/edited it with the proper name and that's:

Beavers_Gone_Bananas

I originally had it as a single beaver, but it's actually all the Beavers in the world, thus it's pluralized now!

I have now mobilized additional forces for this defence of Canadian pride.

I'll join I guess. I have some pretty considerable folding power right now.

I've been out of the loop for so long though... Good thing I have a couple weeks to get it figured out.

This looks like the user to fold for.

Curious though how they consider "first to 20 million" when they're already putting points into the account and the contest doesn't start until next month.

I realize they're putting winSMP WUs in there to ensure the account meets the minimum requirements for bonus points eligibility.

Also, I'm curious what happens to WU points if the code isn't entered properly? If the account name is entered, but the passkey is wrong, does the WU fail to submit? Does it do to a generic catchall account?

Hi Doug,

Jipstyle here, from MaxPC.

As I understand it, each team's score at 12am on the first day of the contest will be used as their starting point. The starting point + 20 million points is their target. First team to the target wins the Jade Monkey.

Rock on! I hope you guys make a great showing ... make us Canucks proud. :)

During the Olympics, I taught my two-year-old to say "Go Canada!"

Now, he blurts it out at the most random times. It's kinda awesome.

I suppose I could lend my 470 to this project if a client comes out. But I am not moving my normal boxes, too much effort.

As far as I know, anyone could submit a WU as another user, but to receive a bonus, you need a passkey.

So with a wrong or missing Passkey, the WU points will be awarded, but the bonus points will not.

I hear his bedroom is a bit cold at night. He needs a dual 9800GX2 space heater to keep him comfy.
:)

Kids are great though. My nephew just hits me with his Wii controller and laughs at me hysterically.

Gotta love 'em. Even the budding sociopaths

Thanks Linus,

You tell us what you got, we'll tell you how to use it for Max points-per-day (PPD).

Feel free to post, start a new topic, etc...

I love how the smallest team after us has at least more than 4x our number of active members. Simply defeating one of them should be a nice slap in the face for them!

Looking forward to it

I folded for the "ape" on your previous team as well, and added a few hundred thousand points, but then the in-fighting and finger pointing became too much, and I switched my clients over subsequently.

A number of people left the team after that, or reduced their folding. ChrisKWarren did it the right way. He first polled everyone on participating, and then proceeded to enter the CC.

Also, HWC is a small team, so even if they don't win, they would be happy to even beat one team that's a lot larger. It's this "can-do" spirit and Canadian pride that made deciding to CC fold for HWC very easy.

Great bunch of people and great team spirit.
