Works fine but the options you have with it are pretty much nil...am very surprised.

Even trying to block a website is not allowed.

"400 Bad Request
No request found."

This error message comes up for most of the so called functions I have tried.

Looks like it is a night of google for me to get this thing un-crippled ><

Take a look over this, custom firmware for your actiontec. Quick read over the page and it looks like you can have a bit more control of the device and maybe put it into bridge mode (use your own router) Im with shaw so i couldnt tell you if this works or not... Good luck

ive tried a few things. im not versed enough with this modem to comfortably flash it. i will need to look up many more pages first. thank you for the link :)

changes i have made so far to it (non FW related) have been almost immediately reverted by Telus. seems like big brother doesnt like it being played with.

i dont need it in bridged mode although maybe i will want that in the future. for now i cannot even block a website in the settings.

if you want to do anything useful, put the unit into bridge mode and get your own router otherwise it is going to be an exercise in futility

this is why i tracked down an ALU (vdsl modem only that telus used to supply but no longer)
hook that up to my router and i'm off and running without any crippleware bloatware telusware slowing me down

I'm surprised that you're surprised.

This has been pretty much the norm for Telus. Shitty firmware crippled gateways.

I heard somewhere that this happened because (or partially because) of issues related to optic TV and it not working right with the stock firmware normally associated with those actiontecs.

I just got telus internet only and my ping is bad. its like 30ms about from speedtest. on shaw it was always 5ms and at worst 10ms.

First of all, 30ms isn't "bad".

Secondly, different ISP means the routing to that speedtest server isn't going to be the same. The path to get there may be longer. Speedtest ping isn't a good way of judging the quality of your internet connection. Try the "tracert" command instead.

Some ISPs will have faster routes to some servers than others, that is expected and their network layout and peering will be different between ISPs.

I just saw my World of Warcraft latency go up by about 25ms going from Richmond on Shaw to Telus in Surrey. I also notice web browser reaction speeds have slightly slowed down too.

I contacted Telus after something happened to my connection speed when it dropped down to 6.5 mbps from the advertised 10-15mbps and they fixed it, but they were not really concerned about the ping. They were more concerned about the advertised speed.

that is telus (or pretty much any isp that isn't focused upon customer satisfaction)
i found telus optik to suffer on weekends and holidays when everyone and their dog was online
then again i have found shaw to suffer in the performance realm during these 'peak' times'
maybe telus needs to sue google for all the data that they are providing users the sources to - after all the french did (another french fail)

I think this explains a lot.

Sounds like you're on a ADSL2+ profile (as opposed to the newer, faster, VDSL). You were not able to achieve advertised speeds because of attenuation and/or noise on your line (you're probably at a fair distance from the CO/remote).

Therefore, in order to attain the desired speeds and maintain line stability, Telus had to increase the interleaving on your line which unfortunately comes at the cost of added latency.

actually my ping the first day they set it up was about 45ms and after the call to support it is now 20ms with speedtest.net. They did something that made the ping go down.

Its funny though, with shaw none of this happened at two locations I have used it at. Ping was always 5ms.

I think after my 6months of discount is up, i'll switch over to shaw.

i GET THE 400 BAD REQUEST all the damn time (firefox)....Ill try a diff browser.

regarding ping, mine actually improved quite a bit by switching to telus. 10ms compared to 21 with shaw. my online games also reflect this. do i notice it other than the numbers? of course not :P
