Time for some new components and with Ryzen now available I'm not sure what to do/think about. Actually waiting for Ryzen 5 but want to prepare. Wanting something for gaming (don't need ultra-high settings) at 1080p while playing mainly FPS (Doom, Deus Ex, Fallout), but want to make sure I can play for a bit of the future too. As well, just using the pc for light work (MS Office stuff) and net surfing. I can wait till early summer to buy. Current build is:
- Coolermaster CM690 mid tower case - will keep this
- Corsair TX 750W PSU - will keep this
- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 2 GB - would like to keep this
- Windows 7 O/S - will probably go to Win 10
- AMD Phenom(tm) II X3 720 Processor - definitely need an upgrade
- WD Caviar Black 640 GB 7200 RPM - will want to upgrade but not really seeking SSD
- GSkill DDR 3-1333 RAM (4 GB) - will definitely want DDR 4 but not sure if I should get 8 or 16 GB
- MSI 790FX-G65 motherboard (DDR 3) - certainly need an upgrade to fit new CPU

So....I'm torn between buying Intel (never have used them) and wanting the Ryzen 1400 (4 core 8 thread) when it comes out. I was thinking about an I5 6500 but will waiting for a Ryzen with more threads be more future-proof?...not sure if more threads will be better for gaming, esp. future gaming. BTW there will be NO OVERCLOCKING needed..just stock. I need advice on CPU, MB, and memory recommendations. Not sure of budget for these 3 main items but would like to keep it at $500-600, plus I know hard drive will be extra. I also know RAM is now costly so I can wait till the early summer in hopes prices will decrease.

Thoughts would be appreciated....thanks so much!

If I were you I would wait until the Ryzen R5 is released before looking at your upgrade. It's going to change things as to what is best for upgrade. We don't know how the R5 will actually perform and how that performance and price will effect Intel's offering. I understand that the R5 will be available in April.
