Need some suggestions help for replacement of my old htpc build. I try to upgrade gear every 5 years or so, halfway through doing all the pc's in the house but I am still a bit out of touch with all the new tech. This is the old build I am trying to replace: p4 3.2mhz/radeon 4350/corsair hx520w/3gigs ddr2 800/HT Omega Striker. I would like to re-use psu, vid card, and sound card. This pc used for streaming movies and a bit of surfing only. I would also like to add a cheap SSD just for Windows 7 and XBMC.

You do not need to reuse your video card with pentium G860 or higher, since the integrated video on that CPU is about par with radeon 4350.

You may want a motherboard that has HDMI out, instead of only DVI and VGA.

You may want a BT module for a BT or android device remote control.

^oops, I meant DVI+VGA

2x HDMI or DP+HDMI is not bad either.

Thanks for the input AEO.
Atm, the 4350 I have comes with HDMI, DVI and VGA. HDMI on my TV and DVI running a small side Monitor. I will probably stick with the 4350's dedicated memory though over sharing memory with G860's integrated. I am trying not to spend too much on this build but If anyone can suggest a mb in the same price range with HDMI/DVI/VGA and/or BT that would be great. Having a BT module is a good idea that I will definitely look into.

As for the Avoid MSI motherboard comment, maybe someone can elaborate a reason why? Was there some major recall? Bad capacitors? Bad Bios? I am only asking since I don't keep up with any pc things anymore.

Didn't Linus have an MSi motherboard for his personal rig?
Some msi motherboards are known to have coil noise.

Why are you buying a Pentium G860 with a discrete GPU?
An APU platform is a much much better choice for a HTPC, graphics are more capable of even running BF3 with consistent framerates.
The socket FM2 boards tend to also cost less, saving you even more money that you could put towards a solid-state drive and get even more value. Or you could just ditch the discrete, Intel HD Graphics aren't the best in the world but it sure is capable of streaming 1080P video.

Thank you Tech for your input, but....
I have looked at amd apu's and have purchased a BD build. I have a "6 core" as my server, enough said about what I think of amd atm.
Here are some other reasons:
- I am on a budget, and the prices listed are not what I am paying since I PM'ed so apu's would cost me more.
- integrated graphics = shared memory, I prefer dedicated.
- The gt 610 is free, my brother-in-law is taking my old Htpc and paying for the discrete so why not.
- This is strictly a htpc build, no gaming.
- I would like this to last me 5 years, socket 1155 has way more to offer then FM2 atm.
- and lastly, 3 pc's using socket 1155 means I can interchange parts.

I think you should reconsider your assessment of AMD for HTPC.
You will get far superior performance from an APU even despite sharing the memory. 256-512mb is more than enough shared memory for the graphics. Ram is dirt cheap either way.
I'm not sure how well a GT610 will handle Netflix HD if thats something you intend to use. Maybe someone else can chime in on that. I know its fine for everything else but silverlight is a major hog.
The ball goes back and fourth between AMD and Intel when it comes to HTPCs currently the ball is in AMDs court. I do agree that 1155 gives more room for upgrading but fm2 is surely more than enough for a HTPC with plenty of room for expansion.

Personally if it was my choice I'd go the AMD route right now but I guess its just a matter of personal preference.
