I've used one temporarily before, and one of my co-workers here has one connected to her computer permanently. The bandwidth available via USB isn't enough for rapid screen updates.

They work well for office related tasks, but you won't (shouldn't) use it to watch video or do anything that requires a lot of movement on screen.

Which model do you have exactly? I'd check if another method is possible before going the USB route. A 2011 iMac for example, should have a thunderbolt port that doubles as mini DisplayPort. Mini DisplayPort will work MUCH better for a second screen than a USB video card will.

Select all

IMO USB 3.0 provides enough bandwidth for video, etc as long as the resolution is 2K and below (60Hz), otherwise USB-C works with 4K.

If a spare laptop happens to be available you could also turn it into a secondary monitor with a program like spacedesk.

I currently have the displayport used for main projectors on the mac, and then going to use the usb to HDMI card for use with ProPresenter for stage display. So its only a screen display text and pictures at most, so isn't too demanding.

Excellent. Should work just fine then as long as it works for Mac.

I would recommend the C2G one over the Tripp Lite since the Tripp Lite is designed for USB3.0. I'm not sure if it will run into any trouble on USB 2.0.
