I got this modem/router from Shaw for free on the promo High Speed 20.
The problems I am having with it is that it will disconnect from the internet for a split second. No modem lights show a drop, Shaw says they don't show it dropped but its long enough to disconnect me from Vent, Skype, online gaming, etc but not long enough to show...
Second, the wireless seems to be utter crap. It will never go into HD in Netflix, if it does its for a few seconds and that's it. This thing seems so crappy is there anything I can do short of just running 50-100 feet of cat5's?

Well first off You shouldn't have this modem with your current internet tier. High speed 20 only uses DOCSIS 2.0 no need for a DOCSIS 3.0 modem. The built in router/modem combo thing is garbage

You have got two options:

1- Get shaw to replace this modem with a stand alone cable modem should be the motorola sb5102, that way you can use your own router not this built-in ****

2- Upgrade your internet package to BB50 and get shaw to put this modem into bridge mode so again you can use your own router. (shaw will not put a Cisco DPC3825 into bridge mode on a high speed 20 or lower tier)

I called Shaw and they are no longer giving out the Motorola modem anymore. Everyone gets these new Cisco ones now, that's what the rep told me. I asked why and they said because it is easier for them this way if or when customers want to upgrade their internet. He also mentioned that it doesn't hurt to have a DOCSIS 3.0 modem even if you're not using it.
The rep also said and he confirmed this his is super that they can and will bridge the modems for customers on any internet plan. They do this so no matter what plan you're on you can still use your own router if you want since they do not provide those Motorola ones anymore.
I found this very interesting since I was under the same impression as you Tyler. Testing the modem/router today with inSSIDer and I am getting 20-25db next to the components I have hooked up to the wireless so just doesn't make sense the problems I'm having   <_<

edit - The reason I got this modem in the first place was it was part of the $29.99 HS20 promo, "free" Shaw WiFi modem included. I really did just want the Moto modem, those are rock solid.

Back in Nov (at least) Shaw made bridge mode only available on Broadband 50 or up. Either your rep was confused or they actually lifted that restriction.

Correct, bridged mode is available for any tier of internet service with shaw now.
Avoid using their wifi routers if you can for anything other than light usage.

They only charge $98 bucks for this device, which means they still make a profit from the sale which in turn means that router itself is probably a $30 device, with the modem being around $30-$40 itself. It serves the purpose for most people, but if you demand any sort of reliability, get your own router and bridge the modem.
