Hello, I have a typed copy of a supposedly legitimate Windows 7 Ultimate key that I found the other day that might come in use to me as I am planning on reformatting my drive that Windows 7 Ultimate resides on. Short of reformatting and being left with a trial version, is there any way I can find of if it will actually work?

Select all

It's simple, buy it instead of using an illegal copy.

create  a disk image of the current install, then you can safely restore it from the image if your new key doesn't work. I would also suggest that you identify the current key that you are using as a failsafe.

Use a VM. Install windows and enter the key, then you'll know.

Oracle VirtualBox is a good one for free.

How would I go about creating a disk image of my current install? Also, is there a specific process that I would use to restore the image?

Ok, I am new to this whole "VM" thing. What is it exactly? Do I just install it to say a usb drive and then once windows is fully installed, then just run the program to see if the key is in fact legitimate?

I've worked with MS doing audits. They only care about the sticker. The only rule they go by is 'he who holds the sticker is the sole recipient of the license'.

Just an FYI, though it doesn't apply, I just wanted to add their view on licensing.

Couldn't he just go into system properties, scroll down to Windows activation and click the Change product key link? Or if it's an illegitimate key would it mark his install?

Delete Image. Please use this feature thoughtfully.  Report this image

VM = Virtual Machine

You can run pretty much any OS within a window. Here's an example, I'm running Ubuntu in Win7.
