I'd just attempt a reinstall, with the older release or the beta as f4te suggested. I also wouldn't disable your AV. Not since you have a good one and messenger being what it is, there should be any conflict worth the risk.

Here's how to fix it, without even doing a reinstall.

If you're comfortable with editing your system registry, do the following to fix your Windows Live Messenger crash issue.

Start > Run > type "regedit" and hit ok.
In the registry editor, navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftMSNMessengerPerPassportSettings

Under "PerPassportSettings", you may have multiple entries with numbers representing each Live account you've logged in with. In each (or if you only have one), expand the numbered key and look for the string "UTL". delete  the value within "UTL".

After the UTL value has been cleared from each Passport, your Windows Live Messenger should open without crashing.

The UTL value contains various bits of XML data related to your Live account. It would seem in the past week especially, there's been a small server glitch resulting in "bad data" being stored in UTL. This "bad data" causes Messenger to crash on startup. The data in UTL will be restored with correct data on your next login.

'tis true, beta has been rock solid for me.

and yes, i do. why?

also, Kris_H, registry fix is likely the fastest and easiest way. Do *exactly* as msngeeks says, and everything will be fine. he knows what he's talking about

Not for me. I put the old one back and fewer problems. It seems that Microsoft is causing the problems themselves.

I would delete  the user entries for each Live account in your registry

I was having the same issue and doing this fixed it for me. There are two utl files. One is red and has your email address in it. The other utl file is blue and has value numbers in it.

At first I tried deleting the values in the blue utl file and that didn't work. Then I deleted the red utl file entirely for each account name and that fixed it for me so far.   :fup:

I deleted the values in the UTL files and searched the rest of the reg for more but there is none that I see. It re-crashes when I click logout or when I close the program in whole and then restart it. The one UTL file just keeps getting rewritten to the value that keeps crashing it.

Ok I did some more digging while make sure you delete  the UTL file so you can get into msn and then while in your account change your avatar to something else if you want to keep the avatar that your using change it to something else and then change it back again. This worked for me and now it's not crashing every time I restart...

Ya i'm having the same problem ever since I reinstalled my OS since I got my new SSD's. Its getting pretty annoying but i'll try deleting the UTL and changing display pics.
