Err... yeah. It's been set at 1200MHz from the factory- the only "use" it has seen is that is has passed a stress-test to ensure 100% stability at 1200MHz (the other chips they get are put into lower-clocked boards and sold for less).

Every chip has had that. CPUs get this treatment too.

The reason you can still overclock the cheaper ones is that there is usually an excess of these good chips. So though it might just be marked at 800, it could be capable of even more than 1200. Or, it didn't pass that test- these cards are a "sure-thing" overclock while the others are not. Just like Turbo Boost.

It's 1200MHz because it is a non-reference designed card by Sapphire.
They overclocked it for you and slapped on an aftermarket cooler like many other brands. Some brands keep the stock reference and overclock it and vice versa.

I know factory overclocked.
But it's 1050Mhz. isn't it?
I never heard 1200Mhz as Hd 7870 factory overclocked.
